RWVA Roundup

I know I didn't get to meet everyone at the RWVA/NoR shoot, and I certainly didn't get names and faces and blogs linked up with everyone that I did meet (we must include urls on our nametags next time ;-) but here is a link list of the folks I know about:

First, our sponsors:
Revolutionary War Veterans Association Weblog
The Gun Guy

And in no particular order, some participants:
Head's Bunker Blog
Doc Russia
Emperor Misha
Woody
CombatController (on the NoR Forum)
Smoke on the Water
Mad Oilman

and many others.... We had 35 on our line the first day and there was at least one other full range. Who else was there? I'll keep updating the list....

RWVA/NoR Shoot in Texas

Halfway between Mingus and Stephenville is, well, pretty much nowhere. But situated nicely in the middle of nowhere is the Tac Pro Shooting Center, where the Mad Oilman and I spent the weekend (mostly on our bellies in the dust) learning a lot about firing rifles.

The trip was not without its scenic rewards. I haven't the faintest when the last time I saw a sunrise was, but Saturday morning's was magnificent.
Middle of Nowhere

We had about 35 people on our range, although we split into smaller groups later on.
Some of the line

We started at 25 meters, firing sets of three "zeroing" or "sighting" shots. The point here was to adjust your sights based on the centers of your groups, but calling my results groups would have been overly polite, so I just left things as they were.

Then we went through a series called an AQT which involved shooting standing, sitting, and then prone, at various targets, with rules about how many in which target and timing and all sorts of stuff. Having never shot my rifle except from a bench, the whole process was so bizarre that I was happy to hit the paper at all.

We scored these results and called that a baseline. There's a minimum score under which you are rated a "cook" (as opposed to a rifleman) and I figure I came in somewhere on the order of waitress or busboy.

Throughout the day, we learned about the different shooting positions, how to use a sling, shooting by the numbers, and we shot and scored and shot and scored. Periodically we'd move further back down the range, re-sight, and shoot some more.
Instructions

By the end of the day, we were back at 200 meters, and those targets look pretty darned small by then. Somewhere along the line we shot another AQT to compare to the baseline, and I think most people went up but my score went down.
Seated shooting

Hey Ma, I'm hunkered!

The last exercise of the day involved squads of three shooters moving and shooting. They started at 200 meters and shot five rounds. Then they all get up and move down range a bit. Stop, get into position and shoot five more rounds. Move closer, repeat, etc. til you've shot 20 rounds. From the back of the range, it looks like they're just strolling along, but when you actually do it, it's surprising how much your heart rate goes up, and how long it takes to settle into position and calm down enough to shoot.
Moving and shooting

By the end of the first day, I was pretty sure I never wanted to hear the word "prone" again, but of course we came back for more on Sunday. We had a much smaller group, and it became obvious pretty quickly that, while I was enjoying shooting the exercises, I wasn't really progressing and needed some help with basics. (I think it was my response of, "I don't know, it's all pretty random," to the question of "Why didn't you even hit the target at all this time?" that clued them in ;-)

I went back to the 25 meter range with one of the instructors and we went through several sighting rounds and a lot of questions and another AQT. I still didn't make it out of the cook's category, I don't think (we didn't score it), but I hit at least one of the targets in each of the prone series, which was a first, so I called it progress.

I did get to the point where sometimes I felt like everything lined up in the same place as before (I have a real problem with this in all my shooting--it is very hard to reproduce a given stance, so it's hard to know how to "do it just like that next time!" when it does work--which is where that "it's all kind of random" comment from above comes from) and I even called a shot (I knew it was high and right) although I don't exactly know why I could call it, and it was only once.

Anyhow, the entire weekend was exhilarating and exhausting. I hurt in strange places and I may or may not be able to move tomorrow, but I learned a lot (really) and if I practice for a few years I might get out of the kitchen....

World Series In Person

So the MO came by tix to Game 4 and OH YEAH, WE WENT TO A WORLD SERIES GAME!

[All pix here: World Series 2005 photoset]

We got there early and walked around taking it all in. We lucked out and found a hidden souvenir stand where we only had to wait behind two or three other people. Most of the lines were more like 50 people long....
Minute Maid Park, pre-Game 4

Proof that it really was a World Series game :-)
World Series!

Before the game they had a tribute to Latino ballplayers, and honored a "Latino Legends Team." Pedro Martinez had the best suit and the most fun--he was dancing around the whole time.
Latino Legends

If you look closely, you can see President George Bush the First and the lovely Barbara. During the between-innings "Kiss-Cam" they got on the big screen and were very nice about it. It must be really odd to be watched everywhere you go.
President and Mrs. Bush 41

The Astros' starting lineup. A bunch of heros and a goat. I mean, I'm sorry to pile on, Mr. Ensburg, but jeeeeeeez.
Starting Lineup

Every time Berkman came to the plate the crowd went wild, and every time they pitched around him. Which was of course the sensible thing to do, but it really sucked if you were an Astros fan.
Almost as good as it gets

The scoreboard response to walking Lance....
Chicken

It was lame to not be allowed to close the roof, but honestly, it was plenty loud with it open. I may have broken bones in my hands from clapping and I'm definitely hoarse from yelling. And the suites were quite reserved compared to the rest of the stadium....
Louder

Lyle Lovett sang a nice rendition of God Bless America during the 7th inning stretch, as opposed to the horrible yodeling of Jon Secada's mangled Star Spangled Banner (my ears are still bleeding).
Lyle Lovett

And yea, there was a celebration, and lo, it was not for the Astros.
Happy Boys

But it was a helluva thing to be there!

AAARGGGHHHHH!!!

It's midnight and we're still watching baseball. This is WAY too intense. C'mon Astros!

Patronage

Wheeee!! I have a patron! My girlfriend Randee walked a zillion miles (okay, sixty, but still--in three days?? holy cow) to raise money for breast cancer research, and she wants to send thank you cards to her friends that sponsored her, and she asked me to design them for her! How cool is that? I'm tickled pink and I hope I can come up with something she likes. The MO wasn't too thrilled with the samples I showed him this evening, but he's a notoriously difficult customer, and the designs were pretty girly....

Yea Fall!

Cool weather = soup and cooking in the oven. This is a Really Good Thing. The MO made caldo gallego (bean soup) and a balsamic glazed chicken today. The whole house smells delicious and we had a fabulous dinner and I have scrumptious leftovers to take to work.... Yippee!

And, being Sunday, we've had a full day of football, with the Texans getting our hopes up in the first half (tied 14-14 at the half??? could it possibly be???) and then dashing us to the ground (total of 6 yards of offense or something ridiculous like that), and then a last-minute Dallas/Seattle reversal favorably affecting my fantasy football matchup (sorry, Andy, the Boys were a sacrifice on the altar of the Spoilers). And, being THE WORLD FRICKING SERIES, we now have the Astros playing well (!) in drizzly Chicago. Tonight is slightly calmer than last night, when we had a full cheering section in the house, but there is still whooping and clapping and improvisational dancing when required. (The MO provides any necessary cussing. I am strictly a positive reinforcement sports fan.)

We also finally bottled the Oktoberfest, so I guess that means it's technically a Novemberfest, but it's going to be yummy.

And now, just because it has been a while, here's a happy kitty.
Lorax napping
Doesn't that just warm your heart?

Joel on Software: Multitasking in the Workplace

Also, I think that private offices have remarkable benefits in terms of ... people's general happiness at work.... We're doubling the size of the Fog Creek offices as soon as we can, and our goal remains to put every developer in a private office.

(Drool. Although given the choice between an office with no view to outside and a desk from which you can at least see a window, maybe slightly less drool. But still. A door.... The problem is, I'd probably never leave it open ;-)

Today I discovered The Generator Blog. Where have I been? Tons of fun web toys. I'm tempted to put signs and buttons all over the site just because now I can....

Double Dual Discness

When I got back from Mexico I had two sets of discs awaiting, from Maria Elisa and Rolf, who took the time to choose songs and artists representing different types of Brazilian music (you can read about it on Maria's site), which is a neat way to approach the project. Thank you both! I am loving all this new music :-)

Great Timing

If you have to suffer through a cold, you might as well do it in paradise....
Nothing to sneeze at

The post-nasal drip started last Sunday night and had progressed to full sinus and ear stoppage by the time we got on the plane to Cancun on Wednesday morning. The, er, nasal effluvium, was quite nasty by Thursday, so off to la farmacia on Friday morning for some sulfa pills which at least helped to the point where I didn't have to take four naps a day to keep going. The improvement seems to have plateaued somewhat short of "healthy" but I still have several days to go on the medication so I'm hoping for the best.

At any rate, through the fog of medicine and pile of tissues, I did notice that Cancun is incredibly beautiful, and I will be spoiled forever as far as ocean swimming goes. Almost 70 people flew in for the wedding, so I got to catch up with lots of family and friends. Rob and Cindy were originally expecting about 40, so the party overflowed to an adjacent resort to accommodate us all. The ceremony itself was by turns beautiful and hysterical, and ultimately, they couldn't have scripted it better.

So here's to my cousin and his lovely bride!

See you in Houston for Christmas :-)

Gower Bird Hospital: Photo Gallery

Gaaaah! This is brutal. At least the MO isn't hollering at the TV like he was last night.... C'mon Astros, you can do it!

Update: Woohooo!!!! Go Astros!

We went to the Bayou City Art Festival yesterday, and as usual, came away with a bunch of great new art. This show occurs twice a year; in the spring it's in Memorial Park and in the fall it's downtown. We've been going for years, and this fall show was one of the very best. Many of our favorite artists participate in both shows, but this year we also found lots of new stuff to love. Of course we never can get everything that we like, but we gave it a pretty good shot this time!

Here are some of the artists (read: the ones that have web sites) whose work is now gracing our walls or shelves:

And just to make it really perfect, IT'S FINALLY FALL! Woohoo!

Family Treasure

I've been scanning a box of 5x7 black-and-white photos that my great-grandfather, Paul Helzel, shot, developed and printed. At the tail end of the box, I found a little envelope with some mid-60s snapshots, including this one of my Aunt Kaaren, my grandfather, and my mom. The MO insists he's already seen it, but I honestly didn't remember it. Anyhow, I think it's awesome.

Family Treasure

My mom is one hot chiquita, and I inherited the genetic blessing of those legs. Thank you, Mom! (I'll be ninety-nine, on my deathbed, talking about my great legs. Grandma's were shaped the same, so it seems to be a maternal-line thing ;-) A daughter of my own, however, given the chance to choose, might want to opt for the paternal skinny-gene instead....)

Three Years of Hell to Become the Devil: Textualism and a Certain Misplaced Sympathy

The headline currently on the front page of the Greying Lady seems like a Scrappleface parody.

To More Inmates, Life Term Means Dying Behind Bars

To which many non-legal or non-NYT readers likely responded, "Well, yeah. What exactly does 'life' mean otherwise?"

(Reportage or editorial? Oh, it's the NYT, never mind--that's a rhetorical question....)

Yeah! Discies!

(Diskies? Discees? Whatever -- disc in the affectionate diminutive form....)

Woohoo! I received my first set of discs from the Dual Disc Debacle swap today. Greg sent Pissed Off Chicks (excellent theme) and Crazy Dream (complete with tie-dye).
Dual Disc Debacle
These go to work with me tomorrow for listening. I think including "Cell Block Tango" from the Chicago soundtrack on the Pissed Off Chicks disc was inspired....

I am so excited to finally actually receive some discs! I do know that one of my sets made it to its destination, but I haven't heard about the others. I would think even the overseas ones should be there by now, as I sent them Priority Mail on September 16....

Silly Ducks

I had no idea ducks could be so cute! The MO received an Orvis catalog yesterday, and the cover photo shows a bunch of ducks coming in for a landing, their feet sticking out at all angles, their bodies tilting crazily in the sky. They look like they've just got their learner's permits and haven't quite figured out how to steer yet.

The photo credit in the catalog is for Tom Vezo, and sure enough, here is the original photo (with even more ducky goodness, as it was cropped on the right for the catalog). Too cute for words, really.
