Something Pithy Here

"Begin at the beginning, and go on till you come to the end: then stop." -- The King of Hearts

I'm an adopted Texan. As they say, "I wasn't born in Texas, but I got here as fast as I could!" I post pictures and opinions as suits my mood, mostly because I can. Hooray Internet!

So far I have three blogs here. By the Way is the oldest. I started it in 2003. I lost a couple of years to Vox because I was too lazy to bother to export when they shut down. I consider it an exercise in accepting impermanence. When I followed my husband to Singapore for his first expat assignment, I started (T)expatriate: A Southern Girl in Singapore. That covers 2010 and 2011, give or take. Next came Oslo, and (T)expat 2: Norwegian Boogaloo,  in 2012. Now I'm back home, and back on By the Way.

Pix live on Flickr. I toss links out on Twitter when I feel like it. I'm still not sure what to do with G+ but I kinda like it.

View from our balcony. The "pool" is a lagoon that goes all around the place. All the greenery is especially nice after our days in the desert lands.

The last month or so....

I know, I know. I've been slacking off on the posting. I think that means that life here is becoming the new normal ;-)

Anyhow, I went through the last month or so of pix and put together another muvee. We discovered that Orchard is even more unreal at night. The waterfront eateries at VivoCity continue to be our favorite lazy-day haunts (for the machinery scenery (and no, my feet don't show it ;-)) and we're both still discovering (and loving) new foods. The MO even deigned to put ice in his beer. Once. He was really desperate. He said it worked. (So Dave, now you can say "I told you so!")

In case it's not obvious from my previous posts, the cats have arrived! I did go visit them in quarantine, and I'm glad I did. If nothing else, my visions of horrid cramped cages were dispelled. The cattery at Sembawang Animal Quarantine is actually pretty nice. Each cat (or in our case, two cats--you can ask to have them housed together) has a room about 3 feet by 6 feet, with a ledge and a window, and it was very clean and the staff were very nice. Visiting hours are minimal, but you get to be inside their room so you can pick them up and all that. It's not like you're limited to poking your finger through a grate to try to pet them. (That didn't prevent them from being pissed off about being there, mind you. Melvin told me ALL about it. She didn't shut up the whole time I was there. I've never heard such a wide range of noises from her.)

(And isn't cattery an awesome word?)

But it's not all cats all the time around here! Sometimes it's also games! (Wow, aren't you relieved?) I went to one of the Singapore Boardgame meetups last month, and had a pretty good time. I got to play a few new-to-me games (Ghost Stories, Incan Gold, something about ducks) as well as some I already knew (Cartagena, Small World) and I'm looking forward to going again. The people I met and played with were very nice, and I only had to pull the anglo "Could you say that again please?" about fifty-eleven times. (To be clear here, it's me, not them. I have a tin ear. I regularly ask the MO to repeat himself, and I've pretty much got a handle on his accent by now.)

The meetups are at Settlers Cafe (clever name, bad website) which, if there had been one of those around when I was in college, I would have just lived there and never graduated. The used record store (Einstein's?) was bad enough....

Okay, I'm sure that's enough geekness for now. Hey! I make scrapbooks, too! I think I have just managed an uncool trifecta.... Here's a big hug to all my lovely friends who continue to associate with me anyhow :-)

Update: Forgot to credit the music! The song in the video is Beautiful off the album Supernature by Alison Goldfrapp. Looove her voice....

International Cats

Here is a muvee I put together to celebrate the arrival of Lorax and Melvin to Singapore.

WARNING: This is ALL CATS  and NOTHING BUT CATS. If you don't already know and love our cats, you are probably COMPLETELY UNINTERESTED in the following video. (Although the song is Very Good, so you might want to give it a listen anyhow. Just close your eyes if it's too much catness.)

The music (ever so appropriate, don't you think?) is from Hôtel Costes: Quatre by French house DJ Stéphane Pompougnac. They were playing this at OChre the night we spent several hours and bottles of wine there. I shazam-ed this song and bought the record the next day. The whole album is awesome, and it comes with each track individually and a full-length single track (over an hour long). (At least if you buy it from iTunes it comes that way.) Now that I know there are a bunch of these.... Could be dangerous.
