I Did Not Know That....

LawDog sez:

I offered my opinion that it was for the same reason that many cultures use a base twelve system -- 12 signs in the Zodiac, 12 inches to the foot, two x 12 hours in a day, five x 12 seconds in a minute, same number of minutes in an hour, so on and so forth -- twelve is the highest number that can be counted to using one hand, and 144 is the highest number that can be counted to using both hands.

The blank look on his face was complete, total and final.

As was the look on my face as I read this. "Twelve? Is he out of his mind? How many thumbs does this dude have?" Half-suspecting a joke, I kept reading, and what he explained is so obvious that I'm kind of embarrassed. (Except for the fact that counting by twelve really doesn't seem very useful in my everyday life, so I guess I'm not really too worked up over it.)

I don't even pretend to keep up with the movies, but Palinode presents an excellent (p)review of a new animated film, Barnyard. I'm thinking these cows would not fare well in Battle Cattle. And I am adding "bullywang" (I like it better as all one word) to my list of nifty new words. Pronunciation-wise, it kind of goes with "bollards," which I learned from my mom, although I tend to use it as a cuss word....

I'm not entirely sure what Jeff Harrell is up to, but so far it's compelling. Start with Part One and then move forward to find more. As of this morning, he's up to Part Seven. I'm pointing it out this way instead of with a list of links to just the story parts because then you'll get to read the "regular" posts, too, like station breaks or intermissions. I kind of like the change of pace. Plus it's much less cutting and pasting ;-)

One for the Mad Oilman

Gutenkarte has come up with an idea that would almost make me consider reading a book on-line.

history of the peloponnesian war

They've sent the book's text through a parser that pulls out geographic locations and plots them on a map. That's pretty cool right there. But then, they also provide the text side-by-side with the map (click the Browse option at upper right once you've selected your text), and when you mouse over a locale, the map adjusts to center on that location.

I don't feel a whole lot of interest for this with fiction, other than general curiosity, but for historical accounts I think it's incredible! Now if someone could figure out how to parse in a timeline, and genealogy charts, I can imagine that I just might be able to retain something from a history book for once.

Speak, I Say

From Hog On Ice: I Grow Unfair, I Grow Unfair

He's all pouty now because I canned his link and refused to let him speak TRUTH to POWER!
God, how I hate that expression. You can't "speak to power." Power isn't a person. It can't hear. Speaking to power is like speaking to entropy or size or any number of nouns that represent abstract concepts which have no consciousness and no location.
He didn't actually say "speak truth to power." I'm just drifting here.
Some people speak truth to power. I speak flatulence to width. I speak menopause to arbitrage. Top that, pretentious pinheads who screw up the English language.

(What the web needs now is a "speak this to that" generator ;-)

Dad says they do everything from insane engine rebuilds to custom slide-out additions. Wow. I have to admit a gap in my cinematic education regarding Henry Higgins and Eliza Doolittle (yes, I know Joe and Marianne are just dying inside right now ;-) but I do know that they weren't named by the ancient Romans. Shelley Powers: Flitter

I wasn"t expecting much when I arrived; I've been to other butterfly houses, and the number of visitors seemed to be disproportionately larger than the number of butterflies. However, when I entered the Butterfly House, within a few seconds a dead leaf butterfly landed on the shoulder of the man in front of me. I would have taken a photo but the hot and humid room had fogged all my lenses. It would take close to half an hour for the lenses to come unfogged; just about the time when I was getting red faced and drenched in sweat, having foolishly dressed for winter.

How cool is this?? You register at postcrossing and then request an address. They email you an address from another registered user along with a postcard id. You send this person a postcard, including the postcard id. When they receive it, they log its receipt, and then you're eligible to receive a postcard. It's like chainmail but funner :-)

Best Music Idea Ever

| | Comments (0)

Run, do not walk, to pandora.com. The concept is simple and BRILLIANT. You tell it an artist or a song that you like, and it streams similar music for you. But (this is key) they don't classify by "genre" (stooopid) or even by artist. They analyze each song individually. So if you happen to like the one cool song on some lame new artist's album, you're going to get other cool songs instead of all the other lame songs by the same artist. Oh, and it's FREE. It's like having the KTRU djs at your disposal, without the frickin' reggae show (which SUCKS, by the way, just in case any KTRUers ever read this--if you have to have this show, at least move it to 2am or something and NOT at rush hour, 'mkay?)

Don't Be an Ass

The Shape of Days: Part of being an adult is knowing how not to be an ass

What are we, four years old again? People, this isn't that complicated an idea: Don't be an ass. If somebody asks you not to take their picture, say you're sorry and move along. Don't insist that "photography is not a crime." Of course it's not, and everybody knows it, and dammit, you know perfectly well that's not the issue. The issue is that when people are made uncomfortable by something you're doing, you should stop. That's called being courteous. It's called being respectful. It's called not being an ass.

(A bit of follow-up here: Hammering in my head and discussion here: Hassled for photography?.)

I think this means I'm a great big wuss

I'm not sure what that means, but I hope the MO won't divorce me over it, as I expect he would come up pretty solidly on the conservative end ;-)

but I kind of like the results:

King Edward I
You scored 68 Wisdom, 73 Tactics, 53 Guts, and 51 Ruthlessness!

Or rather, King Edward the Longshanks if you've seen Braveheart. You,
like Edward, are incredibly smart and shrewd, but you win at any
costs.... William Wallace died at his hands after a fierce Scottish
rebellion against his reign. Despite his reputation though, Longshanks
had the best interests of his people at heart. But God help you if you
got on his bad side.

My test tracked 4 variables How you compared to other people your age and gender:
free online datingfree online dating
You scored higher than 71% on Unorthodox
free online datingfree online dating
You scored higher than 57% on Tactics
free online datingfree online dating
You scored higher than 42% on Guts
free online datingfree online dating
You scored higher than 66% on Ruthlessness

So apparently 58% of the chix out there have more guts than me, but only 29% are more unorthodox! HA! For once it pays to not know your history....

DDD Progress

| | Comments (0)

I have tentative playlists for my Dual Disc Debacle cds. I'm doing an Abecedarium, with some license because I figure Magpies aren't too persnickety about their alphabets and because 26 songs isn't enough to fill up two cds. Test discs are burned for the MO to try out in the car tomorrow. I expect a ... moderate ... reaction because I know that he really hates some of my music, but it's quite a mixed bag (I defy you to put together a single-genre abecedarium (by artist, not by song) from your existing collection) so I think there's something for everyone, even a headbanger like him ;-) and while there are a couple of rough transitions, as a whole I think it works.

The next task is the artwork. Yippee!!

Thank you for giving me so much credit! I feel like I helped to protect a lot of people from a lot of bad things, and of course that makes me feel good. If you were especially concerned for the Saudi royals, then I'm glad to have helped put your mind at ease about that. I, for one, was more concerned about protecting my buddies on the battlefield as well as my friends and family back home, but we all have our priorites.

New Swap

| | Comments (0)

So I've joined a new swap--this time it's musical! You build a playlist and burn an audio cd (in this case, two cds) to swap, five-for-five. I haven't decided on a theme yet. I'm thinking either opposites (for the two discs--boys/girls, love/hate, rain/sunshine, etc.) or maybe an abecediary. Two cds should hold twenty-six songs, if some of them are short. This swap even comes with its own button (see the monkeys on the sidebar :-) so that's kinda cool.

17th Airborne Tribute Videos

| | Comments (0)

I re-visited this 17th Airborne remembrance site the other day:

Dad was a veteran of World War II,
and served in the Glider Infantry
and was attached, for most of his service
as an infrantryman,
to the 17th Airborne Division,
during the Battle of the Bulge
and other critical engagements

and in the comments found out about these guys who are a group that hosts a multi-player first-person shooter on-line. (I think. I admit to not being really up-to-date on this stuff.) Anyhow, someone there has put together two videos (see the lower right section of the site). One of them is a photo tribute "to the real soldiers of the 17th" and the other is built from scenes from the video game itself. They're both worth watching, and are moving in different ways.

I think it's pretty neat that someone from this group took the time to seek out the men whose "brotherhood" they've chosen to represent in their game, and especially that they respect the history.

One more reason why you simply must read Bad News Hughes:

A "madcap duel between mortician & monkey?!" I'm not entirely sure it didn't spring forth from my subconscious fully formed like Athena.

He's like the Candyman of the blogosphere, that is, if the candy is laced with, you know, that stuff you hear about candy being laced with.... The really scary part is that the MO likes the painting....

Following the advice on the results page, since my wacky-factor was exactly 50%, I also looked up WECF.

You are a WECF--Wacky Emotional Constructive Follower. This makes you a Candle burning at both ends.

You work until you drop, and you play until you can stand to work again. [Ed. This doesn't always sit well with employers.] You have so much enthusiasm that you can find it hard to control on your own, and you appreciate the guidance that channels your energy and lets you be your best.

In a relationship, you require lots of attention and support. You often over-contribute and end up feeling depleted and cheated. You may benefit from more time alone than you grant yourself.

Your driving force is the emotional support of others--especially affection. You can run on empty for miles if you have positive energy behind you. Without it--as it occasionally must run dry--you are depressive, listless, and difficult to motivate.

You need a lot of affection. Get it any way you can, but never at the cost of your self-respect or well-being.

I don't remember exactly how I found scribble, scribble, scribble (and I don't suppose it matters) but this is a generous and tempting offer. He's going to post the contents of the Contemporary Nonfiction course that he's teaching at Johns Hopkins University.

Mr. Wisdom offers a mad-libesque formula for generating a fearsome war cry. So far my favorite example (in the original context) is skinbad's (11th comment) but it seems to me this is kind of a multi-purpose tool. For example, the saucy squirrel in Kim's reader's story yesterday might have considered

We the cleverly scurrilous fluffy-tailed brigade of nutmunchers are eagerly looking for the big clumsy hairless ones to come to our impenetrable and cozy winter hideout for a biblical-style ass whoopin' since they are petunias and will be weeded out of the garden of warmth like the trembling flowers they are by our long-toothed big scary squirrels of fear.

That would be the royal we, of course, in this case.

Here's a great streaming source from The Grand Staircase: Radio Paradise - eclectic online rock radio. Based on the four or five songs I've heard so far, this is less edgy than KTRU, but entirely enjoyable. After all, KTRU does dissolve into unlistenable noise experiments on a fairly regular basis, and there's always the insufferable reggae show (aaaaaghhh kill me now!) on Wednesday afternoon (during my drive home! why????).

Update: MUCH less edgy. My husband should not go here.

Wheeeee!! This is fun! Haven't looked at the results to see how easy it is to apply to an existing site, but I like seeing all the different color combinations. I'm getting bored with Gettysburg even though I usually only see my RSS feed....
